International Year of the Light - IYL2015
Solar Energy
The energy from our sun that reaches the Earth can be converted into heat and electricity, and governments and scientists worldwide are working to develop affordable and clean solar energy technologies. Solar energy will provide a practically- inexhaustible resource that will enhance sustainability, reduce pollution and lower the cost of mitigating climate change.
Solar Energy & Climate Change
The need for alternative energy has become more and more apparent as the imminent threat of climate change becomes a reality. According to the International Energy Association, technologies such as photovoltaic panels and solar water heaters have the potential to provide up to a third of the world’s energy by the year 2060. This projection, which is both bold and plausible, would require international participation in reducing greenhouse gas emission through increased usage of solar energy and decreased reliance on fossil fuels.

Tongzhou District, Beijing
Tongzhou was founded in 195 BC during the Western Han Dynasty under the name of Lu County, although there is evidence for human settlement in the Neolithic. At the start of the Eastern Han Dynasty the character Lu by which it was known was altered by the addition of a water radical to become Lu. In 1151 under the Jin Dynasty Lu County was renamed Tongzhou, roughly meaning 'the place for passing through', in recognition of its importance as the land and water approach to Beijing.

Control of Fire by Early Humans
The control of fire by early humans was a turning point in the cultural aspect of human evolution that allowed humans to cook food and obtain warmth and protection. Making fire also allowed the expansion of human activity into the dark and colder hours of the night, and provided protection from predators and insects. Evidence of widespread control of fire dates to approximately 125,000 years ago and earlier.Evidence for the controlled use of fire by Homo erectus beginning some 400,000 years ago has wide scholarly support, with claims regarding earlier evidence finding increasing scientific support. Claims for the earliest definitive evidence of control of fire by a member of Homo range from 0.2 to 1.7 million years ago.
